By weaving personal narratives with socio-political realities, the exhibition opens a dialogue across borders, where lived experiences of distress and resilience take shape in sequential art. Presented as part of this year’s Helsinki Comics Festival, it is set within the festival’s overarching theme of Darkness. The works on display highlight how comics can give voice to what often remains unspoken: the weight of inherited trauma, the complexity of identity, and the strategies of survival and joy that emerge in the face of silence. For both Indian and Finnish artists, drawing becomes a way of mapping inner corridors—sometimes disorienting, sometimes luminous—through which the self moves. Mad Corridors foregrounds voices that grapple with vulnerability, stigma, and solidarity on their own terms. Ultimately, the exhibition attempts to disrupt narrow notions of sanity, suggesting that madness can be understood as a response to oppressive structures, and that it is often social realities themselves that drive us mad. In this exhibition, audiences are invited to slow down, to read, and to wander through these visual passages, allowing the works to speak across cultures and conditions. The comics is produced as part of the MadEnCounters project. The project focuses on the current landcsape of Mental health services in Finland from Mad studies and Critical disability studies perspective and uses comics and zines as a way to communicate this research. Below are some excerpts from the first comic in the project that outlines how the finnish mental healthcare system has evolved within the context of history of madness in the European context. The comic is developed using archival research, developing a narrative from secondary data on mental healthcare policies. Although PMS and PMDD both have physical and emotional symptoms, PMDD causes extreme mood shifts that can disrupt daily life and damage relationships. The narratives explore relationships humans form with the landscapes (real or fictional) they inhabit. The work inspects the botanical garden as a social and cultural institution that has historically exhibited the wilderness of the global south as exotic trophies. In the greenhouses, wilderness becomes botanical. Natural becomes a cultural artifact, displaced from its soil for recreational and educational purposes.
